Biographical / Historical

Stepan Karvash was born on December 30, 1912, in the village of Teisariv, Zhydachiv County, Western Ukraine. His parents, Ivan and Maria (née Lytvyn), were teachers at the local three-grade public school. Around 1922, the family moved to the village of Rudnyky, also in Zhydachiv County. In 1934, Stepan left for medical studies in Graz, Austria, and in 1957 he immigrated to the United States. From 1957 to 1980, he worked at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elizabeth, New Jersey. On January 6, 1980, he retired. While in Graz, he was a member of the Ukrainian Student Society (Ukrains'ke Students'ke Tovarystvo). In the United States, he belonged to the Ukrainian National Association (Ukrains'kyi Narodnyi Soiuz) and the Ukrainian National Relief Association (Ukrains'ka Narodna Pomich).
