Scope and Contents

The collection documents the professional, academic, and personal life of Valeriian Horbachevs’kyi, as well as the activities of his wife, Lidia Horbachevska, and includes materials from their broader community involvement. The collection contains certificates, correspondence, photographs, event programs, and official records spanning Horbachevs’kyi's military service, academic achievements, and professional roles as an economist and educator in Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, and Germany. Photographs in the collection feature individuals and groups associated with Horbachevs’kyi’s professional and personal life, including images of ambassadors from the Economic School in Trnava and members of the Black Sea Cossack Army. Additional materials include postcards with views of Kyiv, announcements of cultural and educational meetings, and a biography of Lidia Horbachevska added to the archive in 2000.

Biographical / Historical

Valeriian Horbachevs’kyi (b. March 9, 1887, Kotiuzhyntsi, Kyiv region, Ukraine) was a Ukrainian theologian, economist, and educator. He completed his theological studies in Kyiv and served as a chaplain in the Russian Tsarist Army during World War I. In 1915, he began teaching accounting and commercial correspondence in Russia. Following the war, Horbachevs’kyi transitioned to academia as a professor of economics, teaching in Mukachiv, Czechoslovakia (1934-1937), and Trnava (1941-1944).

After World War II, he joined the Ukrainian Higher Economic School in Munich, where he lectured from 1945 to 1950 and served as prorector from 1948 to 1949. Records indicate that Horbachevs’kyi was in the United States in 1966.
