Biographical / Historical
Volodymyr Kalyna (1896-1965) was a Ukrainian physicist, mathematician, educator, and civic leader. Born on August 18, 1896, in Kolokolyn, Rohatyn County, Halychyna, he joined the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (USS) in 1914, eventually rising to the rank of company commander and serving as adjutant of the first Kurin by 1918. After the war, Kalyna pursued higher education, earning a Ph.D. from the University of Graz in 1929. He subsequently returned to Lviv, where he taught mathematics and physics.
After World War II, Kalyna emigrated to the United States, where he became an influential member of the Ukrainian diaspora. He chaired the School Council of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and actively participated in various Ukrainian organizations. A full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, Kalyna dedicated his life to education and community leadership. He passed away on November 5, 1965, in New York.
