Biographical / Historical
Edvard Kozak (pseudonyms Eko, Mamai, and Maik Chichka) was a Ukrainian caricaturist, humorist, and painter. He was born in the village of Hirne (today in Stryi raion, Lviv oblast, Ukraine). He was a student of O. Novakivskyi. He was an illustrator and editor of the periodicals "Zyz" and "Komar", and illustrated all of Tyktor's publications in Lviv. As a member of the Association of Independent Ukrainian Artists (from 1932), he participated in the juries of industrial exhibitions and fairs. After World War II, Kozak led the Ukrains'ka Spilka Obrazotvorchykh Msysttsiv in the displaced persons camps and from 1948 was the editor of "Lys Mykyta." In 1950, he moved to the United States, where he lived in Warren, Michigan. His work as an emigre included book and periodical design, publishing his own satirical and humorous magazine "Lys Mykyta" and maintaining his own publishing house of the same name, working in monumental and decorative art, and writing satirical and humorous stories (which were published in two books and illustrated by the author). In 1955-1957, he won first prize at a major animated film competition in Detroit. His work was included in dozens of exhibitions in Vienna, Copenhagen, Munich, Hunter (NY), Detroit, Toronto, and New York City. Before his death, Kozak was able to visit Lviv, where an exhibition was organized in his honor.
