Scope and Contents

This collection contains personal documents, correspondence, organizational records, memoirs, dictionaries, technical materials, meeting minutes, a significant number of photographs (prints and slides), and other uncharacterized materials. Organizational records include materials of the Ukrainian Photographic Society; the Ukrainian Engineers Society; the Terminology Institutes in America; the Shevchenko Scientific Society, the PLAST scouting organization, and the Ukrainian Engineers Society. Meeting minutes include those of the Former Ukrainian Sich Riflemen Society and Ukrainian Military-Historical Institute (1949-1971), the Terminology Section at the Shevchenko Scientific Society and Terminology Center (1951-1979), and the Ukrainian Engineers Society of America (1962-1976).

Biographical / Historical

Mykhailo Pezhans'kyi was a Ukrainian and Ukrainian American civil engineer and educator. He was born on September 29, 1900, in Lviv, Ukraine, and died on June 16, 1987, in New York City. After completing his education at the Vienna Technische Hochschule in 1927, Pezhans'kyi began his career as a civil engineer in Lviv. He became a member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in 1936. After World War II, he lectured at the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration University in Munich.

In 1949, Pezhans'kyi immigrated to the United States, where he continued his engineering career, working for several construction firms. He was a founding member the Ukrainian Engineers' Society of America (TUIA) and the Ukrainian Terminological Center of America. Additionally, he served on the terminological commissions of both TUIA and the Shevchenko Scientific Society.

Beyond his contributions to the engineering field, Pezhans'kyi was actively involved in Ukrainian community organizations. He held positions within the Plast Ukrainian Youth Association, serving on its executive board and as chief executive.
