Z. Kuzelia was a prominent Ukrainian ethnographer, linguist, bibliographer, journalist, and civic leader from the Berezhany region. He served as a professor at the Ukrainian Free University and was an active member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. As a student, Kuzelia led the Vienna 'Sitch' (1902-1904) and later lectured in Ukrainian language at the University of Chernivtsi (1909-1914). From 1920, he resided in Berlin, where he edited the daily Ukrains’ke Slovo (1921-1923) and, beginning in 1926, served as a professor at the Ukrainian Scholarly Institute and editor of its journal Osteuropaische Korrespondenz. From 1930 to 1936, Kuzelia was president of the Alliance of Foreign Journalists. In 1945, while in Bavaria, Germany, he co-edited the first part of the Encyclopedia of Ukrainica. He relocated to France in 1951, where he spent the remainder of his life.
