Scope and Contents

The collection materials include greetings to the Second Congress of RUKh from foreign guests and Ukrainian civic leaders, as well as addresses and speeches by delegates and press releases. Topics covered include RUKh's bylaws, Ukraine's economic problems, interethnic and social policy, the role of the church and the peasant movement in Ukrainian state renewal, youth and armed forces, and reforms in Ukraine. Speakers represented include D. Pavlychko, O. Savchenko, Ye. Sverstiuk, I. Zaiets’, S. Plachynda, O. Lavrynovych, and others. The collection also includes a letter to Bohdan Koval’ and a bumper sticker.

Biographical / Historical

The Second Congress of RUKh (People's Movement of Ukraine) was held in October 1990 in Kyiv. RUKh was a broad civic and political movement that emerged in 1989 and played a central role in Ukraine's drive toward independence. By the time of the Second Congress, the movement became a political party and was addressing foundational questions of Ukrainian statehood, national identity, and social reform.
