Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, memoirs, diaries, and art works of Petro Andrusiv. There are also files related to his involvement in foundation and operation of various Ukrainian organizations in USA, such as “Samopomich”, “Ob’iednannia mysttsiv Ukraintsiv v Amerytsi”, and others.

Correspondence contains personal and business correspondence with various people and organizations. The collection includes manuscripts of part 2 of Andrusiv’s memoirs and his diaries of 1947-1956 and 1970. There are three photographs dated 1971-1971. Art works include Petro Andrusiv’s drawings and illustrations of various years. Series V: Subject Files, 1947-1972 consists of documents, correspondence, and other materials related to various Andrusiv’s professional and community activities.

Biographical / Historical

Petro Andrusiv (1906-1981), Ukrainian artist and illustrator, was born in the village of Kamianobrid near Lviv. Being lost during WWI, the eight-year-old boy ended up in Russia. From Moscow orphanage he got to Riazan, and then to Warsaw. He reunited with his parents in 1921. After graduating from a gymnasium, he studied at Warsaw Academy of Art (in 1927–1936) majoring in oil painting and graphics. Cofounder and active participant of exhibits of the circle of young Ukrainian artists Spokii. In 1936, on graduating from the Academy, he worked at the Higher Architectural School of Warsaw, and improved his artistic skill in Paris. After WWII was a resident of DP camp in Mainz-Kastel, Germany. In 1947 immigrated to the USA, settled in Philadelphia and in 1955 he started working as an artist at Philadelphia architectural bureau. Cofounder of Ob’iednannia mysttsiv ukraintsiv v Amerytsi, Ukrains’koi mystets’koi studii, and magazine Notatky z mystetstva. From 1954 he is a member of Philadelphia Art Alliance. In 1972, P. Andrusiv moved to Riverhead where he fully devoted himself to art, and continued to actively participate in numerous committees and societies of the Ukrainian community.

Petro Andrusiv painted landscapes, portraits, icons, frescos, mosaics and illustrated books. He is specially known for his historical paintings.
