Scope and Contents

The collection documents the literary and linguistic scholarly work of Romanenchuk and includes articles on literary subjects, book reviews, and literary criticism. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence with persons and institutions, and documents connected to Romanenchuk's roles at various civic and community organizations, such as the Shevchenko Scientific Society, the Organization for the Defense of Four Freedoms of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, the Ukrainian Youth Organization of America, and others.

Biographical / Historical

Bohdan Romanenchuk (1908–1989) was a Slavist, Ukrainian scholar, university professor, and full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. He taught at the Academic Gymnasium in Lviv (1936–1938) and its affiliated branch (1941–1943). From 1935 to 1939, he was co-owner and editor of the publishing house Ukrains’ka Knyhospilka.

Romanenchuk was a co-founder and co-editor of the literary journal Litavry in Austria (Innsbruck–Salzburg, 1947–1948) and served as the long-term publisher and editor of the literary journal Kyiv in Philadelphia (1950–1964). He authored grammar and orthography textbooks for Ukrainian-language schools in the United States and was an organizer and board member of the School Council of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. He also served as publishing director of the School Council’s textbooks until 1961.

Additionally, Romanenchuk was head of the Educational Council of the Ukrainian Youth Organization of America (SUMA) and publisher and editor of the bibliographical quarterly Ukrains’ka knyha (The Ukrainian Book) issued by the Shevchenko Scientific Society, TUBA, and TUK (1971–1974).

He was the author of the encyclopedia of Ukrainian literature Azbukovnyk and wrote numerous articles and studies on Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Nataliia Kobrynska, Yevhen Malaniuk, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, Mykola Voronyi, as well as works on world literature, literary theory, aesthetics, and a large number of scholarly and literary book reviews.
