Petro Syl’vestrovych Karmans’kyi (1878-1955), Ukrainian poet, translator and political figure, was born in the town of Chesanov, Poland. He graduated from the gymnasium in Peremyshl’ and continued his studies at the philosophy faculty of the University of L'viv. After one year, he enrolled in theological studies in Rome where he stayed for four years. Abandoning his studies there before completing a degree, he finished his studies in Peremyshl’. He later re-enrolled at the University of Lviv, where he graduated with a degree in humanities, specializing in Ukrainian studies and classical philology.

Karmans’kyi began his teaching career at a gymnasium in Galicia in 1909. Between 1913 and 1914, he taught at the Bandon Teacher's Seminary in Canada, then returned to Galicia. During World War I, together with V. Pachovsky , B. Lepky and others, he worked for the "Soiuz Vyzvolennia Ukrainy" in Vienna. In 1915, he published a large cycle of poems "Kryvavym Shliakhom". During the period of Ukrainian independence, he was a delegate to the ZUNR parliament from Ternopil. After its unification with the UNR, he went to Kyiv, where the government appointed him secretary of the diplomatic mission to the Vatican. Although he arrived in Italy, he never fulfilled that role, as the UNR had by then collapsed. From 1923 to 1930, he taught at a secondary school in Porto União, Brazil. In 1932, he returned to Galicia, residing in Drohobych before moving to Lviv in January 1940 to teach at the University of Lviv.
