Maria Strutyns’ka Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains correspondence, writings, personal and family documents, subject files, and photographs. The correspondence files include letters from Sviatoslav Hordyns’kyi, Ivan-Kedryn-Rudnyts’kyi, Hryhorii Kostiuk, Iurii Lavrinenko, Ivan Lysiak-Rudnyts’kyi, Milena Rudnyts’ka, Iulian Serediak, Halyna Zhurba, and others.
The writings within the collection consist of manuscripts and typescripts of articles, translation of a short story by Martin, the play “Amerykanka,” diaries. The diaries include entries written in L’viv during World War II, as well as a diary documenting work at the Ivan Franko Muzei Museum in L’viv in 1940.
The collection also contains Strutyns'ka's passport, refugee identification cards, work and membership cards, biographical notes, newspaper obituaries, personal financial records, and her will. Additionally, it includes a school certificate of Mykhailo Strutyns’kyi dated 1901. Among the materials in the collections are financial and church documents related to Vasyl’ Navrots’kyi, signed by Andrei Sheptyts’kyi, and money orders, registrations, identification cards and funeral expenses of Melania Navrots’ka. The collection holds documents related to the Ukrainian Writer’s Association in Exile “Slovo” and Matirnyi Soiuz Ukrainok, as well as photographs of Maria Strutyns’ka from various periods, and a photograph of Mykhailo Strutyns’kyi and Katia Hrynevych.

Biographical / Historical
Mariia Strutyns’ka (also known as Maria Strutynska, with the literary pen name Vira Mars’ka), was a Ukrainian writer and community activist. She was born in Dolyna, in what is now the Stryi raion of Lviv oblast into a family of priests. After completing her education at the teacher’s seminary in Stanyslaviv (now Ivano-Frankivs’k), she pursued further studies at the Ukrains’kyi Taiemnyi Universytet in Lviv.
From an early age, Strutyns’ka was actively engaged in civil and cultural affairs. She was a dedicated advocate for the women’s movement and contributed articles to magazines focused on women’s issues. In Lviv, she was involved with the Soiuz Ukrainok, serving as editor of its magazine Ukrainka (1937-1939) and as co-editor of Nashi dni (1941-1944). Additionally, she worked at the Ivan Franko Museum in Lviv from 1940 to 1941.
At the end of World War II, Strutyns’ka relocated to Austria, and in 1949, she settled in Philadelphia. Over her lifetime, she authored numerous works, including the novel "Buria nad L’vovom" (1944), the play "Amerykanka" (1973), the collection of short stories "Pomylka d-ra Varets’koho" (1964), as well as memoirs and articles compiled in "Daleke zblyz’ka" (1975). Her short stories, essays, and memoirs were published in numerous periodicals in the United States. Strutyns’ka was a member of the Ukrainian Writers’ Association in Exile “Slovo.”
Mariia Strutyns’ka died in 1984 in Philadelphia. She is buried at Ukrainian Catholic cemetery in Fox Chase, Pennsylvania.

Abstract
This collection consists of correspondence, articles, plays, a memoir, diaries, family and personal documents, and photographs of Mariia Strutyns’ka (1897-1984), a Ukrainian writer and community activist. The collection also contains personal documents belonging to her parents, Vasyl’ and Melania Navrots’kyi, files related to the Ukrainian Writers’ Association in Exile “Slovo”, and Matirnyi Soiuz Ukrainok.
