The Ukrainian girls gimnasium of the Basilian Sisters was founded in Lviv on June 20, 1906. Permission to open this school was granted by the National Education Council. In the 1906/07 academic year the faculty consisted of the principle, the Rev. Spyrydon Karkhut, 5 professors, one teacher for the lower grades and one nun. The founder of the gymnasium the Rev. S. Karkhut served as principal in 1906/07 – 1908/09 and in 1912/1913. Later Iulian Levyts’kyi served from 1909/10 – 1911/1912 and the Rev. Teodosii Lezhohubs’kyi from 1913/14 – 1918/19. The teaching of religion and spiritual counceling was under the guidance of the Rev. Leonid Luzhnyts’kyi from 1906 untill 1933/34. The later principals were Mother Superior Vasyliia Motiukh, 1920/21, Prof. Volodymyr Adriianovych 1922/23, Dr.Vasyl’ Shchurat 1921/22 – 1933/34 and the Rev. Mons. Vasyl’ Lytsyniak 1934/35 – 1940. With the beginning of the 1940/41 school year the gymnasium was converted to a ten-year school and the gymnasium as a classical type of educational institution where Latin, classical Greek and other language were taught, ceased to exist.

Work for a commemorative book about the gimnasium of the Basilian Sisters began in the 1960s, and resulted in the pubication of two volumes in 1980 and 1984, respectively, under the general editorship of Vasyl' Lev.
