Biographical / Historical

Ukrainian Writers’ Association in Exile “Slovo” (Ob’iednannia ukrains’kykh pys’mennykiv v emigratsii “Slovo”), is an organization that existed in the United States in the years 1954-1997. Established first in New York on 26 June 1954, it officially began to exist on 19 January 1957 when a number of members of the organization signed the by-laws. During its existence, “Slovo” held seven conventions (1958, 1964, 1968, 1970, 1975, 1982, and 1990) and these were attended by delegates from other countries. The association also published twelve issues of an irregular literary almanac, Slovo, that featured the work by the organization’s members. The presidents of the association have been Hryhorii Kostiuk (1954-1975), Ostap Tarnavs’kyi (1975-1992), and Lida Palii (1992-1997).
