Stephen Shumeyko papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains correspondence, a journal, writings, a photograph, the memorandum of the Pan-American Ukrainian Conference to the UN General Assembly, yearbooks/programs of the Ukrainian Youth's League of North America (1938-1948), newspaper clippings, and obituary. It also contains material related to the Ukrainian National Chorus: programs (including from 1920 in Berlin) and what could be the cover design for final concert of Ukrainain Republic Capella. There is also a script for a children's school play "Chotyry Pory Roku na Vkraini; ukladu L. Tsehel's'koho", which seems to have nothing to do with Shumeyko.

Biographical / Historical
Stephen Shumeyko was a Ukrainian American lawyer and community activist. He was a co-founder and the first chair of the Ukrainian Youth's League of North America (from 1933 to 1940) and co-founder and president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (from 1944 to 1949). Under his leadership, the UCCA worked to strengthen the Ukrainian diaspora's presence in American society and expand its connections with the U.S. government, including facilitating the resettlement of Ukrainian refugees from Western Europe. In 1946, he represented the Ukrainian diaspora at a peace conference in Paris and participated in establishing the Pan-American Ukrainian Conference in 1948, where he was elected secretary general. He co-founded the United Ukrainian American Aid Committee in 1945 and was involved in the leadership of the Ukrainian National Association. Shumeyko became the first editor of "The Ukrainian Weekly" in 1933, a role he held until 1959.
Shumeyko was born in 1908 in Newark, NJ to Mykhailo and Teklia Shumeiko, who were immigrants from Velyki Birky in the Ternopil region of Ukraine. In 1911, he moved with his family to Velyki Birky and later attended the gymnasium in Ternopil. In 1922, he moved back to the United States with his family, where he completed his secondary education and obtained a law degree in 1931. He died in New York in 1962.
