Scope and Contents

Most of the materials deal with historical and genealogical heraldic subject matter. Some of the interesting documents which Tokarzhevs’kyi collected and copied from various sources, including the Order of the Knights of Constantin, Order of St. George and Order of Malta. There is important genealogical material about the families of Mazepa and Orlyk. Interesting information is also included about Symon Petliura and Carpathian Ukraine. There are many notes about political matters – political order, diplomatic service, reflections on Italian fascism, ideas concerning a federation among the nations of central Europe, and the relations among the Caucasian nations to the Soviet Union. Also included is correspondence, bibliographial notes, postcards, visiting cards, and currency.

Biographical / Historical

Ian Tokarzhevs’kyi-Karashevych was a diplomat, political activist, member of an old noble family, and historian-heraldist born in the village of Chabanivtsi, county of Ushyts’, Podillia. He was an honorary knight of the Knights of Malta. After graduating from university, he resided at his family estate and took part in the work of local zemstvo. In 1918-1921 worked in the Ukrainian consulate in Vienna and Constantinople (1919-1921), including as an ambassador to Constantinople. In 1922 directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Exile of the Ukrainian National Republic in Tarnów, Poland. In 1924 moved to Paris when he founded the French Society of Ukrainian Studies and was president of the International Heraldry Institute. From 1936 he lived in Rome, then from 1948 in London where he died. He is buried in the USA in Bound Brook, N.J. at the Ukrainian cemetery. He is the author of numerous articles of Ukrainian history, heraldry and literature in Ukrainian and foreign languages.
