Biographical / Historical

Ivan Shvkrako, a Ukrainian writer and editor, was born in the village of Zvenyhorod, currently in the L’viv region. He studied at the Faculty of philosophy at L’viv University. In 1930-1935, he worked as a proofreader and translator at L’viv-based publishing house “Dobra knyzhka.” At the same time, he also contributed short stories and scholarly articles to Ukrainian newspapers and magazines. In 1935-1939, he worked as a literary editor of the L’viv-based newspaper Dilo.During the Soviet occupation of L’viv, Shkvarko was imprisoned. In 1944, his memoir, “Proklynaiu: z shchodennyka ukrains’koho v’iaznia,” was published by “Ukrains’ke vydavnytstvo” in Krakow. The book was republished by “Ukrains’kyi Holos” in Winnipeg in 1947 and by “Dniprova khvylia” in Munich in 1953. After the war, Shkvarko lived in Austria. In 1945-1948, he worked as an editor of two Ukrainian newspapers in displaced persons camps. He suffered from tuberculosis, but there is no information available when and where Ivan Shkvarko died, though it was likely after 1963.
