Scope and Contents

The bulk of this collection consists of Onats’kyi’s diaries, as well as newspaper clippings arranged and bound in the notebooks by Onats’kyi, primarily from Italian and German periodicals, but also from American, Canadian, French, Russian and Slovenian newspapers covering Ukrainian political and historical events of the periods of 1919-1921 and 1937-1941. The collection also includes articles and letters by Ievhen Konovalets’, Dmytro Andriievs’kyi, Volodymyr Martynets’, Mykola Stsibors’kyi, Volodymyr Kedrovs’kyi, Kost’ Kysilevs’kyi, Oleh Ol’zhych, and Milena Rudnyts’ka, among others.

Biographical / Historical

Ievhen Dometiiovych Onats’kyi (1894-1981), a Ukrainian civil activist, scholar and journalist, was born in a town of Hlukhiv (now Sumy oblast, Ukraine). He graduated from gymnasium with a silver medal in Kamianets'-Podils’kyi. In 1912-1917 he studied at the faculty of history and philosophy at Kyiv University and was a member of Shevchenko Scientific Society. In 1920 Onats’kyi and his wife moved to Rome, where he became head of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission and was an editor of “La voce del Ucraina”. During the interwar period, he contributed prolifically to “Rozbudova natsii”, “Novyi klych”, and “Novyi shliakh”. He was a correspondent for such newspapers as “Dilo”, “Svoboda”, “Novyi chas” and “Ukrains’kyi holos”. From 1936 to 1940 Onats’kyi taught Ukrainian in Naples. From 1940 to 1943 he taught at Rome University. In 1943 he was imprisoned by the Germans, first in Italy and then in Berlin. After the Second World War, he immigrated to Argentina. In 1947 he was editor and director of “Nash klych”, the almanac “Vidrodzhennia” and the monthly “Dzvin”, as well as one of the founders of the Society of Ukrainian scholars, artists and writers in Buenos Aires. He also compiled an eight-volume “Ukrains’ka mala entsyklopediia” (“Small Ukrainian Encyclopedia”). In 1953, Onats’kyi was appointed head of the Ukrainian Central Representation in Argentine, and in the period of 1960-1963 he was head of its Main Council (Holovna Rada). Ievhen Onats’kyi died on October 27, 1979, and is buried in Buenos Aires.
