The bulk of the collection consists of documents, photographs, publications, and ephemera related to the Ukrainian populations of the Displaced Persons camps around Augsburg, Germany in 1945-1949. There are also some related materials from the 1950s and one document from 1987.

Biographical / Historical

Augsburg, a city in the Bavaria region, was in 1945-1949 a center of Ukrainian political and cultural life in Germany. There were two Ukrainian Displaced Persons camps: “Somme-Kaserne” (with approximately 4,000 persons in 1945-1949) and Haunstetten (approximately 500-2,000 persons in 1945-1947). The Ukrainian National Council (UNRada) was active here from 1945 to 1947, as well as other organizations and institutions.
