Scope and Contents

The collection consists of three items. There is a unique 1930 photograph depicting Sviatoslav Hordyns’kyi, Ulas Samchuk, Ivan Bahrianyi and Arkadii Liubchenko. The collection also contains an article by Ulas Samchuk about Arkadii Liubchenko published in "Svoboda", as well as an obituary by an unknown author.

Biographical / Historical

Arkadii Panasovych Liubchenko, a Ukrainian writer, was born in 1899 in the Kyiv region. In 1920-1930, he was an active member of several literary movements. He served as a secretary of the literary circle “Hart”, of which he was a member in 1923-1925. In 1925, he was a co-founder and secretary of VAPLITE and a co-founder of the literary magazine “Literaturnyi iarmarok”. In 1930, he became a member of the literary group Prolitfront and was a co-founder of the literary magazine “Prolitfront”. In 1941-1942, he was an editor of “Nova Ukraina”, a newspaper based in Kharkiv. In 1942, he moved to Kyiv, and immigrated to Germany in 1944. He died in 1945 in Germany.

Liubchenko began his career as a writer in 1923. He published short stories, a novel, and articles, and he translated from French. He is an author of “Buremna put’” (1929), “Vona” (1929), “Vertep” (1930) and “Vitryla tryvoh” (1932), among other works. He also composed a play “Zemlia horyt’” (1929). In 1951, Liubchenko’s “Shchodennyk” (Diary) was published posthumously.
