Biographical / Historical

Mykola Butovych (born December 1, 1895, in the village of Petrivka, Poltava gubernia; died December 21, 1961, in Hackensack, New Jersey) was a modernist painter and graphic artist. He received his education in Prague, Berlin, and Leipzig, studying at the Academy of Graphic Art from 1922 to 1926. Butovych's artistic career took him to Lviv, various cities in Western Europe, and ultimately to the United States from 1948 onward.

He held solo exhibitions in Berlin and New York and participated in group shows in Lviv (including numerous exhibits of the Association of Independent Ukrainian Artists), Paris (the Salon d’Automne), Los Angeles (exhibiting bookplates in 1933), Rome (graphics in 1938), Brussels (1946), and the United States from 1952 onwards (exhibits of the Ukrainian Artists’ Association). Butovych's works often included illustrations for books by prominent Ukrainian authors such as N. Gogol, V. Stefanyk, and I. Kotliarevs’kyi. His artistic themes drew heavily from Ukrainian folkways, mythology, and folklore, often imbued with humor or grotesque elements.
