Biographical / Historical
Pavlo Virs’kyi (February 25, 1905 in Odesa - July 5, 1975 in Kyiv) was a Ukrainian ballet dancer and choreographer. He trained at the Odesa Music and Drama School (1927) and the Moscow Theatre Technicum (1927–1928), and performed as a soloist and ballet master at the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theatre and with the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Kyiv Military District (1939–1942). From 1942 to 1955 he served as artistic director of the ballet group of the Red Army Ensemble. In 1937, he founded the Ukrainian State Dance Ensemble, serving as its ballet master and artistic director from 1955. The ensemble toured the United States and Canada in 1962.
