Biographical / Historical

Vasyl Verhun (1909-1981; pseudonyms Vasyl Modrych; VMV; V. Verva; V. Verhan) was a Ukrainian journalist, pedagogue, public figure, literary scholar and editor, was born in the village of Potik, in Rohatyn county (currently, Ivano-Frankivs’k oblast), in Ukraine. He studied at school and gymnasium in the town of Rohatyn. After serving in Polish army, he studied economics, journalism and Slavic philology in L’viv.

Verhun worked in the business and banking sector in Ternopil' and Terebovlia after his studies and obligatory internship. He contributed to the Kameniari magazine as well as to various printed media of the Ukrainian Social and Radical Party. During the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine, he worked in "Hosbank" (Hosudarstvennyi Bank, State Bank) in the town of Horodenka. Later he taught at the Technical College of Soviet Trading and studied pedagogy at the State Pedagogical Institute in Lviv (1940).

In 1941, Verhun was conscripted into the Soviet army and served in the air force until the end of the war. In 1945, he arrived in Vienna, Austria, and afterward left the Soviet zone for the American zone. In 1946, he lived in the camp of Filgsbiburgh in Bavaria, Germany. After the camp's liquidation, he moved to the city of Landsgut. During that time, Verhun was a teacher of Latin and German at the middle school as well as a teacher of Ukrainian language and literature at Ukrains'ka real'na himnaziia. Later he became principal of the school. At the same time, he was an editor of the bi-weekly newspaper Na chuzhyni.

In 1950, Verhun arrived in the United States and settled in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1955, he became co-editor of the Narodna volia newspaper in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and in 1971 was appointed editor-in-chief. He also contributed to Svoboda and Ukrains'ke narodne slovo, and taught at Shkola Ukrainoznavstva (School of Ukrainian Studies).

In 1973, Verhun completed his doctoral studies in philosophy at the Ukrainian Free University, defending his dissertation "Psykholohichni elementy v zhytti i tvorchosti Ivana Franka" (Psychological Elements in the Life and Works of Ivan Franko).

Verhun died in 1981 in Long Island, New York, and is buried at St. Andrew cemetery in South Bound Brook, New Jersey.
