Scope and Contents

Collection documents the military career and civic activities of Petro Samutyn. Materials include correspondence, reports, speeches, and writings on military history. Subject files contain materials on the history of the Ukrainian army and veterans affairs, and document Samutyn's involvement in the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, the Ukrainian Free Cossacks, and the Association of Democratic Ukrainian Youth in the USA.

Biographical / Historical

Petro Samutyn (1896–1982), originally from the Poltava region, was a Ukrainian military figure, sotnyk (captain) in the Army of the Ukrainian People's Army/UNA (UNR Army), and major in the Polish Army. In 1917, he actively participated in the Ukrainization of the Russian 6th Army Corps and served as a delegate to the Second and Third All-Ukrainian Military Congresses. During the Hetmanate period in 1918, he completed the Officers’ Instructor School (Instruktors'ka shkola starshyn), and in 1920 became commander of a sotnia in the 6th Sich Rifle Division. From 1928 to 1929, Samutyn served as a contract officer in the Polish Army. He later studied at the Higher Military School in Warsaw from 1931 to 1933. The government-in-exile of the Ukrainian People’s Republic granted him the rank of major general (heneneral-khorunzhyi). After emigrating to the United States, Samutyn was active in Ukrainian civic and veterans’ organizations and wrote on military history and historical subjects. He died in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
