Scope and Contents

This collection contains personal documents of Pavlo and Ol’ha Shandruk, extensive amounts of Pavlo’s correspondence (1945-1978), and materials related to Ukrainian emigre military organizations, the “Ukrainian Free Cossacks”, the "Promethean movement", and the Shevchenko Scientific Society. It also includes speeches, articles, and other writings by Shandruk and others. The collection does not contain materials from Shandruk's period of activity in the Ukrainian National Committee in Berlin (1944).

Biographical / Historical

Pavlo Shandruk was a military leader, General of the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR), and an active member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. He was born in the Volynia region. He graduated from the Nizhyn Historical-Philological Institute in 1911 and the Alexeyev Military School in Moscow in 1913. He participated in World War I and served in the UNR Army from 1917 to 1920, commanding a brigade of the III Iron Division as a general. By late 1920, he was in Poland, where he co-founded the military journal "Tabor." Starting in 1938, he served as a contract officer in the Polish army and graduated from the Polish General Staff Academy. During the Polish-German war, he commanded the 29th Polish Brigade. In late 1944 he took the leadership of the Ukrainian National Committee in Germany and was appointed by its presidium in 1945 as Commander of the Ukrainian National Army, which included the division "Galicia". After the war, he lived in Germany, and from 1949, in the USA. He authored the books “Ukrains’ka-moskovs’ka viina 1920 r. v dokumentakh” (1933) and "Arms of Valor" (1959).
