Biographical / Historical
Ivan Stavnychyi (6 July 1891, Tovste, Zalishchyky County, Galicia - 2 October 1973, Cleveland, Ohio) was a Ukrainian cultural and educational figure, journalist, editor, publisher, and translator. During the period of Ukrainian statehood, he edited the monthly Prolom (1919), Stanislavs'kyi Holos, and Stanyslavivs'ki Visti. In 1934, he founded the publishing house Universal'na Biblioteka. During the German occupation, he organized Prosvita libraries. After leaving Galicia in 1944, he lived in Germany before emigrating to the United States in 1950. He was active in the Shevchenko Scientific Society and in the Ridna Shkola Society. Stavnychyi was also the editor of Alʹmanakh Stanyslavivsʹkoi Zemli.
