Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials of Olha Sonevystska and her family. Personal materials include IDs, medical and financial records, membership certificates, correspondence, funeral records (including death announcement clippings and certificates), and an inscribed copy of Ihor Sonevyts'kyi's "Withered Leaves." In addition to Sonevyts'ka’s correspondence with family, such as Ihor and Natalia Sonevyts'ka, there is correspondence with other individuals, as well as with organizations such as the Shevchenko Scientific Society. The collection also contains Sonevyts'ka’s professional materials, including a short bibliography of her works, writings, interviews, and exhibition materials, specifically related to Sonevyts'ka's gallery. Finally, the collection contains writings by others, including on Ukrainian art exhibitions and Sonevyts'ka herself.

Biographical / Historical

Olha Sonevytska (1902-1989) was a journalist, founder of the Olha Sonevytska’s Art Gallery in New York and public activist. She was born in the village Kopychyntsy in the Podil (now – Ternopil) region, graduated from the State Gymnasium in Ternopil, and studied philosophy in Vienna. After moving to the United States, she wrote and worked for such publications as Free Word (Canada), Our Life, New Way (Canada). She was co-editor for the almanac Chortkiv District (published in 1974). Sonevytska was a member of such organizations as UNWLA, Ukrainian Journalists Association of America (Spilka ukrains'kykh zhurnalistiv Ameryky), the Ukrainian Art and Literary Club, choir of the Saint George Ukrainian Catholic Church and others.
