Scope and Contents

The collection contains production and press materials for performances of A Light From the East (1990) about Les Kurbas staged in New York, Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Lviv; Yara's Forest Song (1994) based on fragments of Lesia Ukrainka’s poetic play; Waterfall/Reflections (1995) with Nina Matvienko staged in Kyiv and New York; Virtual Souls (1997) in collaboration with Buryat National Theatre staged in Ulan-Ude, New York, and Kyiv; Flight of the White Bird (1998–1999); Song Tree (2000) based on shchedrí‍vky and malanky from Poltava and Hutsul regions with participation of Gogol Bordello; Circle (2000) created after a trip to Ust-Orda Buryat Autonomous Okrug; performances based on Kupala songs in Kyiv in 2002; Still the River Flows (2008) based on kolyada and vertep texts; Swan (2003), Raven (2011), and Dream Bridge (2011) based on poems by Oleh Lysheha. Non-theater related content include materials related to Yara's participation in the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute Summer School in 1988-1998; documentations of Kurbas-related events 1988-2007; and publication records of the book In a Different Light by V. Tkacz and Wanda Phipps.

The collection also contains has programs, scripts, and ephemera related to Virlana Tkacz’ early theater work before Yara. It also records Viralna Tkacz’ correspondence, writings, Serhiy Zhadan translations, research files, and other professional papers. Audio materials include interviews, Arts and Literary Club event recording, and published music CDs with translations by Virlana Tkacz.

Materials are largely textual and visual, comprising correspondence, scripts, translations, press records, brochures, newsletters, programs, flyers, photographs, posters, and related printed matter. Among other formats scattered throughout the collection are CDs, audio cassettes, and VHS tapes.

Biographical / Historical

Yara Arts Group was established in 1990 and is based in New York City. Virlana Tkacz (b. 1952) is one of its founders. The Yara Arts Group is a resident company at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. Yara has created over 40 theatrical works based on extensive research in Eastern Europe, Siberia, and elsewhere in Asia. Yara’s signature style consists of multilingual dialogue and songs supported by evocative visuals. In the works, Yara connects theatre, poetry, singing, historical material, and movement.

Virlana Tkacz is the founding director of the Yara Arts Group. In addition to extensive theatrical activity, she curated a series of museum exhibitions and translated Ukrainian poetry together with African-American poet and founding member of Yara Arts Group Wanda Phipps.
