Juchym Charczenko papers
Scope and Contents
The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, memoirs, and articles of Juchym Charczenko. There are also documents of the Charczenko family and historical files related to the Buchenwald Camp. The collection also has audiotapes of Charczenko’s memoir and photographs from the DP life.

Biographical / Historical
Juchym Charczenko (Iukhym Kharchenko) was a Ukrainian community activist, a member of OUN, and a memoirist. He was born on January 20, 1912, in the village of Podibna, Kyiv Guberny, Russian Empire (now located in Mankovsky raion, Cherkasy oblast, Ukraine).
Charczenko begain his education at the village school from 1919 to 1924. He continued his education at the gimnasium in Uman from 1924 to 1927 and then at a vocational school in Uman from 1927 to 1932. Although he enrolled in the Institute of Metallurgy in Dniprodzerzhynsk, Dnipropetrovsk region in 1932, his studies were interrupted due to the military draft, and he served in the Soviet army in Dnipropetrovsk from 1933 to 1935.
Later, from 1936 to 1941, he pursued studies at the Dnipropetrovsk Mining Institute (now the National Mining Institute). In 1941, he was mobilized for service in the Red Army but managed to escape shortly after. Returning to Dnipropetrovsk in the same year, he co-established and became the head of the company "Ukrainets" while also being affiliated with OUN under the pseudonym Semen Khomenko.
In October 1942, Charczenko was arrested for his involvement with OUN in Dnipropetrovsk and was sent to the concentration camp Ihren. He remained detained in the concentration camp in Buchenwald from 1943 to 1945. Following his release, he moved to a displaced people camp in Kornberg, where he was elected as the mayor.
In 1951, Charczenko relocated with his family to the United States, settling in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was actively involved in various organizations and institutions, serving as a longtime member of the Board of UCCA, deputy head of ODFFU, and a member of the Committee of the Church of Saint Volodymyr.
Charczenko authored the memoir "From Dnipropetrovsk via Ihren to Buchenwald," which was reprinted in several editions. He also compiled a collection of materials about life in the DP camp in Kornberg and wrote his own memories about life in Ukraine and Germany,
