Mykola Velychkivs'kyi papers
Abstract
The collection documents the life and work of Mykola Velychkivskyi (1882–1976), a Ukrainian professor, economist, and political figure, through his correspondence, memoirs, scholarly writings, personal documents, photographs, and subject files. It also includes materials related to his involvement with the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences in Germany and the Ukrainian National Rada in Kyiv, Lviv, and Bratislava, as well as accounts of the Holodomor. Additionally, the collection contains papers connected to his family members, Melania Velychkivska and Serhiy Velychkivskyi.

Biographical / Historical
Mykola Velychkivskyi (1882–1976) was a Ukrainian professor, civil servant, and political figure. He was born into a priest’s family in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. In 1913, Velychkivskyi graduated from the Commerce Institute and went on to hold key roles in academia, government, and Ukrainian émigré organizations throughout his life. Between 1917 and 1919, he served in the Ministry of Land Affairs, overseeing the Department of Agricultural Economics and Statistics. From 1920 to 1926, he lectured on economics at the College of Commerce and Industries, serving as its director from 1923 to 1926. In 1927, he was appointed head of the Department of Statistics, teaching at various higher education institutions until 1937. In 1938, he was imprisoned in Kyiv, but upon his release, he became rector and professor at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute from 1941 to 1942. During the Second World War, Velychkivskyi led the renewed Ukrainian National Rada in 1944 before emigrating to Germany in 1945. In Munich, he served as chair of statistics and financial studies at the Ukrainian Economic College. In 1951, he relocated to the United States with his family, where he remained active in Ukrainian academic and cultural organizations. Velychkivskyi was a prominent member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and the Ukrainian Free Academy of Arts and Sciences. He edited the journal Ukrainskyi Kvartalnyk and authored the memoir Sumni Chasy, reflecting on his experiences during turbulent times in Ukraine.
