Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection consists of writings, mainly poems and short stories, by Andrii Harasevych. There is also Andrii Harasevych’s outgoing correspondence and correspondence between Andrii Harasevych’s parents and various people related to the book publication of his writings. There are documents related to the MUR literary organization meeting as well as writings about Andrii Harasevych by various authors. Collection contains images published in different newspapers depicting Andrii Harasevych.

Biographical / Historical

Andrii Harasevych (1917-1947), a Ukrainian writer, was born in the city of L’viv. He received his secondary education in Khust and Uzhhorod where his parents moved after the World War I. After graduation from gymnasium in Uzhhorod in 1937, Harasevych studied law at first, and then linguistics at Charles University and Ukrainian Free University in Prague.Harasevych lived in the DP camps in Karsfeld and Berchtesgaden, where he participated actively in literature and art groups. He was also a teacher of Ukrainian language at the gymnasium and a full member of the MUR organization. Harasevych published a collection of poems, “Sonety,” in Prague in 1941. The second collection of his poems, “Do vershyn,” was published posthumously in 1957 in the United States. During his literary career, he used the penname Andrii Surmach. Andrii Harasevych died in 1947 after falling from the Batsman Mountain. He is buried in Germany.
