Biographical / Historical

Mykhailo Kuz’movych (1914-1981) was a Ukrainian-American physician, surgeon, bibliophile, art patron, and collector. Born in Stryi, he completed his secondary education at the Ukrainian Academic Gymnasium in Lviv and earned a medical degree from Lviv University in 1938. During his student years, he was active in Plast and other Ukrainian student organizations. Following military service in the Polish Army, wartime imprisonment, and medical work in Kraków and Lviv, he continued his surgical training in Austria and received a doctoral degree from the University of Innsbruck in 1948. He emigrated to the United States in 1949, where he practiced medicine, later specializing in family and geriatric medicine.

Alongside his medical career, Kuzmovych was deeply engaged in Ukrainian cultural life. A devoted collector of rare Ukrainian books, he donated his library to the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. He was a patron of modern Ukrainian literature, theater, and visual arts, supported publications and theatrical productions, and regularly wrote on artistic topics for the newspapers Svoboda and Suchasnist. He also collected Ukrainian bookplates (ex libris), co-founded the Society for the Cultivation of the Ukrainian Bookplate (Tovarystvo plekannia ukrains’koho knyzhkovoho znaku) in 1962, and exhibited his collection publicly in 1973. Kuzmovych died on June 11, 1981, and was buried at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Bound Brook, New Jersey.
